We’ve laid a lot of stone. Now we’re laying down what we’ve learned — straight from the job site.
If you’re planning a stonework project—whether it’s a cozy new fireplace, a stunning stone retaining wall, or adding curb appeal to your home’s exterior—you’ve likely come across two main options: natural stone and manufactured (or cultured) stone veneer. So, what’s the difference? And which one is right for your project?
At Legend Stoneworks, serving Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and surrounding areas, this is one of the most common questions we get from homeowners and contractors alike.
Natural stone is exactly what it sounds like—stone that’s quarried straight from the earth. It has unique color variations, textures, and an undeniable “wow” factor that’s hard to replicate. It’s incredibly durable, making it ideal for outdoor applications like stone retaining walls, chimneys, or flagstone patios and walkways. However, it’s heavier, which can make installation more labor-intensive and costly. It also requires a sturdy foundation or structural support, especially when used for interior or exterior wall cladding.
Manufactured stone veneer (also called cultured stone) is made from concrete and molded to look like real stone. Thanks to modern techniques, it mimics the appearance of natural stone incredibly well—and it’s much lighter, which makes it easier (and often cheaper) to install.
It’s a great choice for fireplaces, feature walls, and exterior facades, especially when weight or budget are considerations. And yes—it holds up well in B.C.’s climate when installed properly.
It depends on your project goals. If you’re looking for a high-end, one-of-a-kind look and long-term durability, natural stone might be the way to go. If you want something beautiful, budget-conscious, and easier to install, manufactured stone veneer could be your best bet.
Either way, our team at Legend Stoneworks is here to help bring your vision to life—whether you’re building a new brick chimney, adding stone veneer to your home’s exterior, or dreaming up a custom stone fireplace.
