How to Spot and Repair Brick Wall Damage Before It Gets Worse

At Legend Stoneworks, we know that brickwork is not just about beauty—it’s about protecting your home or building from the elements for decades to come. While brick walls are known for their durability and timeless look, they aren’t immune to damage. Understanding what causes brick deterioration—and how to repair it—can help homeowners avoid costly repairs down the line.

Common Causes of Brick Damage

Brick walls face years of exposure to moisture, temperature swings, and shifting ground. These factors can cause:

  • Cracks in brick or mortar joints
  • Spalling (when bricks begin to crumble or flake)
  • Structural movement from foundation settling
  • Improper repairs with the wrong mortar mix

Cracked Brick Wall with water damage

Moisture is one of the biggest culprits. When water seeps into brick and freezes, it expands, causing the brick to crack or the surface to pop off. This is known as freeze/thaw damage, and it’s especially common in older homes that have softer, more porous brick and lime-based mortar.

Cracks vs. Spalling: What’s the Difference?

  • Cracks may be cosmetic or structural. Hairline cracks can appear due to temperature fluctuations and aren’t always urgent—but if left untreated, they can allow water to seep in and worsen the problem.

  • Spalling is a more serious sign of damage. If your bricks are flaking, crumbling, or the outer face is popping off, it could be due to moisture getting trapped inside or from using a too-hard mortar mix during previous repairs.

How to Repair Brick Wall Damage

If your wall is showing signs of cracking or spalling, prompt repairs are essential to prevent further deterioration. The general process for brick repair includes:

  1.
  1. Removing damaged mortar using chisels or a raking bar.
  2. Cleaning the joints with a stiff wire brush.
  3. Wetting the area to prevent dry brick from absorbing moisture from the new mortar.
  4. Tuckpointing or repointing with a mortar that matches the original (especially important for historic walls).
  5. Replacing damaged bricks and properly curing the mortar.

  •

⚠️ Important: For spalling or structural cracks, professional assessment is crucial. Using the wrong mortar—especially on heritage brickwork—can do more harm than good.
